In Memory

Charles Vermorel

Charles Vermorel

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of our classmate and friend, Charlie Vermorel, who passed away peacefully at his home in Apple Valley, CA on Monday, May 27, 2024 after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

Charlie will be remembered as a good and honorable man, a very good friend, a loving and devoted husband and father and a protector of the weak and defenseless. He is survived by his loving and devoted spouse Paula Freitas, who cared for Charlie throughout his five year struggle, and his son Gregory Vermorel.

Charlie will also be remembered as an all-around nice guy, a gentleman, an exceptional guitarist, a prankster and a lady’s man. He was a huge St. Thomas Aquinas High School booster and fan, even into his later decades. He would often ask me “Do you remember the game when Bob Bradley threw that winning pass to ___ and we ran 65 yards to make the touchdown?” I would laughingly respond, “How can you even remember that?” Charlie frequently reflected on his high school days and often brought up memories of those glory days. In many respects, I think his school days at St. Thomas Aquinas were Charlie’s best days.

Charlie said so himself in this quote from his profile page here"The STA years were among my most fond memories of my life...my parents, friends, fellow students, teachers, music, academics, weekly Mass--an overall nurturing environment during that whole time of life. Our teachers were simply outstanding! They "gave us their all".  A personal special thanks to Dr. John Sause, Mr Kurt Moll, Esq., Mr. Shea, and Ms. May (Atty & Judge)...lifetime influences for me. But I have to say that all the teachers and staff were incredible.  They really took care of us. I had an incredible time at the 20th RU--it was as if we were never apart in many ways.  Just by luck, many of my closest friends were in attendance and spending time with them made the three 3 days go by much too quickly. Once a Raider, ALWAYS a Raider! You guys and gals are the best!"

An obituary has not yet been posted. A memorial service for Charlie will be arranged to be held in the autumn in Gainesville, FL, where Charlie lived for many years. We will send notice of the memorial service when details are finalized.

In lieu of flowers and cards, Paula would ask that you make a donation to your favorite animal shelter or charity in his name.

Thank you.

Charlie was a good friend and truly a kind and caring person. He was a very talented musician and I enjoyed all the time we spent together.  I fondly remember all his efforts and patience in helping me, " a talentless wanna be musician".   Rest in peace, Charlie.

I feel so very fortunate to have been a friend. Charlie was an amazing man. Especially when considering his choices made in life: Paula was the love of his life. Charlie will forever be her "Officer and a Gentleman". And, grateful that his son, Greg, emulates many of Charlie's qualities. Kudos to Debbie, Charlie's first beloved wife and, Mother to their son Greg. We are fortunate to have had Charlie in our class, and in our lives.
For me, on a personal note: Charlie, may you rest in divine peace, my dear and loving friend.

Charlie, always kind and thoughtful your love and generosity will be missed by all of us. You were a great help behind the scenes for our 25th reunion and I will always be grateful for your technological expertise.  I am sure you and Bill Slattery are back together playing rock and roll music as the newest DJ team in heaven! Rest in Peace dear classmate.
